WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR SUBMISSION EMAIL
-
Your name.
-
Your age.
-
Your submission. See below for formatting.
-
Proper citations and permission to use must be included for anything you did not create yourself (eg. stock photos or reference books). Images with Creative Commons licenses may be used without permission, but we still will need citations.
-
For stories and poems, feel free to include notes for our illustrators.
-
Anything else we need to know about you or your submission.
FORMATTING
-
For writing, please send .pdf, .odt, .doc, or .docx files. Alternatively, you can send your writing in-line in the email you send.
-
For art or photography, please send .png or .jpg files. Scanned drawings or quality photographs are accepted.
-
For files that include both writing and images, please send .pdf, .odt, .doc, or .docx files.
-
Your submissions will most likely be laid out differently in the magazine than they were when you sent them so that they match the rest of the submissions.
-
If your submission is not formatted as said above, we will still try to make it work, but it may not be possible. Please try your best to follow the guidelines.
-
Can I submit multiple pieces for one issue?Yes! You can submit as many things as you would like to each issue. We try to include a variety of work, though, so if you submit a lot of things, it is unlikely that all of them will be published. Submitting multiple things may give you a higher chance of something getting published, though!
-
Can I send in my child's work for them? You may send in work that your child made, but you must have their permission, and we don't encourage it. A much better idea is to let your child do the communications themselves. We would much prefer to receive an email with some spelling mistakes than an email written by a parent. We are more likely to publish work if the creator of the piece sends it in themselves.
-
How do I become an illustrator?Anyone aged 9-16 can sign up to be on the illustrator list! To learn more, check out our page called 'Become an Illustrator'
-
Can my extremely talented younger child submit/I am older than 16, can I still submit? The Youth Voice Magazine only accepts regular submissions from 9-16 year-olds, so the answer is no. In each issue there is a 'Youth Voice Community' page, though, which anyone of any age submit to. For each issue there will be a prompt, such as 'draw a woodland scene' or 'write a poem about clouds' or 'photograph a wild animal'. You can check out our website page on that called 'Community Page'
-
Can I post my submission somewhere else as well (eg. Instagram)?Yes! The Youth Voice Magazine is only showcasing your work - you still own the full rights. You can post your work wherever you like. Be careful submitting to other magazines, though, since they may not accept work that was already published here.
-
Can I submit something I made a while ago?Yes! The work you submit does not need to be created specifically for this magazine. As long as your submission fits within the guidelines, it will be considered.
-
Why was my submission rejected? We can't fit every submission into the magazine, so it is guaranteed that not everything will be accepted. Just know that we have never received a 'bad' submission. Most submissions that are rejected are rejected due to layout issues (they didn't fit nicely into this issue of the magazine) or content issues (topics/styles were inappropriate for the age group - either too mature or too simplistic). If your work has been rejected, please continue to submit and don't give up hope!
